Is it time for your baby’s first dental visit?

We recommend a first visit by your child’s first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth, whichever comes first. It’s time to book if:

  • Your baby’s first tooth has come in
  • Your child is approaching their first birthday
  • You have questions about teething, feeding or pacifiers
  • You notice white or brown spots on your baby’s teeth

Book your baby’s first visit using the form below or call us at (804) 601-0469. We’ll let you know what to expect and what to bring.

Good to know: teething can make babies fussy and drooly, but a high fever usually isn’t caused by teething. If your baby has a fever, check in with your pediatrician.

What happens at your child’s first dental visit?

Short, relaxed and all about getting comfortable. Most of the time is spent answering your questions.

We look at how teeth are coming in and how the mouth and jaw are growing.

Fluoride varnish

Teething tips

Simple, safe ways to soothe sore gums and get through teething.

Feeding guidance

Advice on bottles, sippy cups, nighttime nursing and snacks that are kind to teeth.

Infant Dentistry FAQs

Straight answers to the questions parents ask us most.

When should my baby first see a dentist?

By their first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth coming in, whichever comes first.

Can my baby go to bed with a bottle?

It’s best not to. Milk, formula or juice can pool around teeth overnight and cause decay. If your child needs a bedtime bottle, fill it with water only.

Are baby teeth really that important?

Yes! Baby teeth help children chew, speak clearly and hold space for adult teeth. Healthy baby teeth set the stage for a healthy adult smile.

How should I clean my baby’s teeth?

Wipe your baby’s gums with a soft, damp cloth after feedings. Once the first tooth arrives, brush twice a day with a rice-grain smear of fluoride toothpaste.

How can I help my toddler feel ready for the visit?

Keep it light and positive. Read a picture book about the dentist, play pretend by counting teeth together, and avoid words like “hurt” or “scary.” We’ll take care of the rest.
