Is your child having a dental emergency?
A dental emergency is any problem that needs urgent care to ease severe pain, save a damaged tooth or stop bleeding. The most common ones include:
- Sharp or lasting tooth pain
- A chipped, cracked or broken tooth
- A tooth that has been knocked out or pushed out of place
- A cut or injury to the lips, tongue or gums
If your child needs emergency dental care, call us right away at (804) 601-0469 and we’ll see them as quickly as we can. Acting fast can often save a tooth and prevent bigger problems.
Important: if your child has bleeding that won’t stop, severe facial swelling, a head injury or any life-threatening symptoms, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room right away.
What are common dental emergencies?
Here’s what to do in the moment, and when to call us.
Severe toothache
Rinse with warm salt water and use a cold compress on the cheek if there’s swelling. A children’s pain reliever, given as directed by the label or your pediatrician, can help. Never put aspirin on the tooth or gums. Call us so we can find and treat the cause.
Chipped or broken tooth
Rinse with warm water and use a cold compress for swelling. Save any pieces of tooth in milk or saliva and bring them with you. Call us promptly, as a break can expose the inner tooth and lead to pain or infection.
Knocked-out baby tooth
Rinse the area gently with water and call us right away. Don’t try to put a baby tooth back in its socket, as this can harm the adult tooth growing underneath.
Knocked-out adult tooth
Pick the tooth up by the crown (the white part), not the root, and rinse it gently with water. Try to place it back in the socket. If you can’t, keep it in milk or saliva and call us immediately. Time matters.
Tooth pushed out of place
Rinse the mouth and have your child gently bite on clean gauze to hold the tooth steady. A cold compress helps with swelling. Call our office right away.
Lip, tongue or gum injury
Press gently on the area with clean gauze to stop bleeding. If bleeding is heavy or won’t stop after 10 to 15 minutes, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
Gum swelling or infection
A pimple-like bubble or swelling near a tooth can mean a hidden infection, even without pain. Call us so we can find the cause and treat it quickly.
Lost filling or crown
A filling or crown that comes loose can leave a tooth sensitive and exposed. Save the piece if you can and call us so we can get it fixed before it causes more discomfort.
These are general guidelines only. Swelling, a lost filling or crown, or any other worrying change can also be an emergency, so please call us for advice as soon as possible.
